Tribute to The Stylistics
The Stylistics

called Light Of The World and that they were looking for a guitarist. Nat
got the gig and left his job as a postman to be a part of the band. Nat
later heard that he had replaced Bluey (of Incognito fame). Bluey left due
to a serious accident the band had where their percussionist Chris Etienne
died when a lorry collided into their van when they were parked on the hard
shoulder. Gee Bello replaced Chris and the new Light Of The World was born.
During a tour in the first year the band stopped at an instrument shop where
to everyone’s surprise Nat picked up a trombone and started playing
it fluently. He had learnt to play the trombone when he was 10 when he was
in the Boys Brigade. The band insisted that Nat should become a part of
the horn section as well as play guitar, it was a challenge that Nat agreed
to. It was during this period that the Light Of The World horn section developed
a reputation for having a fat sound and became sort after by many other
bands and artists.
A new pop band on the scene called Spandau Ballet asked the horn section
to write horn lines on their new album. Nat arranged most of the parts,
and due to his natural ear for music most of the writing stemmed from him.
Chant No 1 was the successful hit track to come out of that collaboration.
Lotw went on to spurn 2 successful albums entitled ‘Light Of The World’
and ‘Round Trip’. They toured and had appearances on Top Of
The Pops where Nat sung lead vocals on ‘I Shot The Sheriff’.
The band went through changes, Everton Macalla was replaced by Mel Gaynor
who later became the drummer for (Simple Minds) During 1980 other members
of the band formed Incognito and Beggar & Co., this lead to the band
splitting up and leaving Nat & Gee to Continue as Light of The World.
They went on to produce a successful Album entitled ‘Check Us Out’
produced by Nigel Martinez who had success with Billy Ocean and Norman Conners.
Gee was the featured lead vocalist on the Album and Nat concentrated on
playing guitar, writing and arranging and doing backing vocals.
No 1 Girl was the successful track to come from the Check Us Out Album and
is considered to be one of the great rare groove classics of the eighties.
Nat and Gee enjoyed a year of success with 4 of the original band members
rejoining them for a major Uk tour. In 1983 Nat & Gee went on to record
as solo artists. While Gee went to America to record his album Nat stayed
in London to record a single with EMI ‘Too Busy Thinking Bout My Baby’
a remake of the Marvin Gaye hit. It became Tony Blackburn’s record
of the week for two weeks in a row when Tony Blackburn was in the heights
of his popularity and did very well for Nat’s profile. Nat went on
to sign a record deal with A & M records. A & M flew Nat to Phillidefia
to record four tracks with The legendary producer Dexter Wandsell of Jones
Girls fame at Teddy Pedegrass’s studio from that collaboration Nat
released a single called ‘That Girl’. Nat also recorded a track
called Ego, which was a huge hit in Belgium Holland and France. Nat did
many TV appearances to promote the single as well as appearing twice on
The Uks Solid Soul music program. Nat went on to support Millie Jackson
for a week at Hammersmith Odeon and 2 nights supporting Anita Baker at Hammersmith
Odeon as an opening act. During Nats Career he has continued to work with

Throughout the nineties Nat Ran a successful production company called Reliant
Productions with his production partner Carlton White. Together they did
many remixes under the name Natty & Slaps for Babyface & Stevie
Wonder, Sean Paul, Ginuwine ,Heavy D Jaheim Chaka Demus & Pliers and
many more. The company had music featured in Film and Tv. They wrote the
theme tune for the Real McCoy (BBC comedy series) in the nineties and did
the music for The Desmonds they also did adverts and voice-overs for radio.
Nat teamed up with his old horn section in the late 90s to collaborate on a track featuring M Beat & Jamariquia. This lead to interest from Sanctuary records to record a new Light Of The World album. Nat reluctantly agreed because at this stage Light Of The World still legally belonged to Nat Augustin & Gee Bello. Due to musical differences and not thinking it was the right deal for them, Peter Hindes & Gee Bello declined to be involved with the ‘Inner Voices’ album. Nat was featured lead vocalist throughout the album. He also co wrote, played trombone, guitar, and did 80% of all the backing vocals. Since the Inner Voices album Nat has re- established himself with Gee Bello and Mel Gaynor and has continuously promoted Light Of The World.
In 2003 Nat won a competition on This Morning television
program on ITV where he wrote lyrics to the theme tune and sung it live
with guitar and vocals.
Nat has just finished supporting Alexander Oneal on a British tour as a
solo opening act doing George Benson numbers and also performed in Alex
O’Neal’s Band.
Nat and Gee have just finished a major 24 date UK tour at the beginning of 2007 supporting Alexander O’Neal as Nat and Gee from Light Of The World. They also helped Alex out by being in his backing band with Gee on percussion and backing vocals and Nat as musical director, guitarist and backing singer.
Nat co- produced Alexander O’Neal’s new
love Ballads Album ‘Alex Loves’ released in March 2008 where
he produced a remake of ‘Secret lovers’ which featured Mica
Paris
Also Nat wrote the only original song on that album called ‘We’re
On Our Way’
and is currently working on Alex’s latest live Album.
